My Gen X Playlist: Where is My Mind – The Pixies

Houston, we have a problem.

A while ago, we felt good about cooking and eating a healthy meal at home. There was enough for the next night’s dinner and we packed up our chicken leftovers. The problem is, that Tupperware of chicken completely disappeared on us. Where did it walk off to? We haven’t a clue.

There is a good chance one of us ate it and we completely forgot. I’m rooting for that option. Boy, am I rooting for that. But the more concerning possibility is the chicken didn’t make it to the refrigerator at all and ended up *fill in the blank here* instead. It’s been about a month and I still occasionally search for it. It’s like I’m hoping I missed it the other 50 times I scoured the frig and it miraculously turns up hiding behind a carton of milk. Yeah, wishful thinking.

I also occasionally stand in the pantry and look around to see if it mistakenly found its way there. I’ve even stepped inside once, closed the door behind me, shut my eyes and took a big whiff. They say the nose knows, right? Thankfully, nothing. Will it turn up someday? I want it to and don’t want it to at the same time.

How could we lose a chicken breast? I really hope we ate it and just plainly forgot. The thought of the alternative is just gross. Usually I’m fine. I distract myself or convince myself everything is OK. If I’m being honest, not knowing what happened to it sometimes makes me feel like I’m losing my mind.

The Pixies released Where is My Mind in 1988. I was reading the backstory and learned it was inspired by snorkeling in the Bahamas on a high school trip.

Though Francis was in college when he wrote what would become one of the band’s biggest hits, he drew inspiration from an experience that happened years prior. The way Francis tells it, the story sounds like something out of a dream. “The song is about a high-school trip to the Bahamas. I was swimming in clear water and there was a small fish – about four inches, not dangerous at all – that was aggressively following me and poking me,” he explained . . . “It kept doing it – it freaked me out. I was like, ‘I have to get away from this fucking crazy fish.”

His fish is my elusive missing chicken. The thought of finding it rotting in a sealed Tupperware in some random location in the house keeps chasing me. This fear will nip at my heals until it finally resolves itself… or worse yet, it doesn’t. I don’t want to think about that.

  3. Yes, I feel like I’m losing my memory day by day!
    Every time my in-laws couldn’t find something, they just ordered a new one. It was quite a job to clean out their garage once they passed on. They had a lot of brand new gadgets and appliances still in unopened boxes. I hope that is not my future!
    Oh,one thought on finding your missing chicken…have you counted your Tupperware containers to see if one is missing?

  4. I am a self-professed “ditzy guy”. I’m incredibly absent minded. I misplaced things all the time. So when I do, I can usually think of 40 different places it might be in before I start to panic. At this point, I would probably be wondering. “did I put it in the silverware drawer?“ And things like that.

  5. Timely song for me, as I’ve been going down a grunge rabbit hole. It’s interesting to me that Bowie was super influenced by The Pixies, sort of messed with my mind when I heard it, since I was trying to get some sort of timeline sorted and it didn’t fit at first. 😀

    Your post is so funny, too, because this is the kind of daily thing we who are a little older deal with. 😀

  6. Hopefully the chicken ended up in the trash can. I sometimes accidentally throw things out in the trash when I clean. Like spoons! 😂🫣

  8. Missing chicken breast, lol 🤣
    I once lost one of my slippers. I looked and looked and looked for it. It eventually showed up in the freezer. I blamed the gummy. (Did you check the freezer?)

    1. The freezer! That gave me a hearty laugh! Someone suggested I count our containers (brilliant!). I’d have noticed a mid sized one missing if it the chicken was “misplaced”!

      FYI – if that’s the only side effect of the gummy, totally worth it…

  9. We once left our leftovers in the trunk of our car for a few days. One morning, I got in the car and told my husband it smelled like cat urine. It wasn’t. It was dinner. 😶
