I’m on my second go around watching Ripple. I just rewatched Episode 2. I found a few lines that caught my ear.
Why do people feel like they always have to fill in the blanks? It’s OK to say nothing sometimes. And do nothing. How I would love to say and do nothing with someone.
The other day, someone made a comment that I wasted my sabbatical by not traveling. Actually, that’s not exactly what was said nor was it that direct. But it’s been a constant theme tossed in my direction and that’s how I’ve begun to translate them in my head.
For a while, I felt the urge to explain the purpose of my time off. The sabbatical provided an avenue to heal physically and mentally. I needed to slow life down and do nothing. Besides, there also was the obvious financial issue. We were making do on one paycheck and dipping into our savings while I was off. Travel seemed to be an extraneous expense given our drop in income.
In their defense, it did appear as though I was on one long vacation. So I can’t blame them for wondering why I didn’t hop on a plane to see the world when I suddenly had an abundance of time. Fortunately, these questions have slowed down. Every so often someone innocently brings it up and I now just smile and nod. The topic dies down without any reply to stoke the coals. I count to ten quietly in my head and the conversation quickly detours to escape the awkward pause. Funny how a ten second silent gap can cause things to quickly move along. Mission accomplished.
So I’ve stopped trying to fill in the blanks. I no longer feel the need to say something about doing nothing. Who would have thought a second round of nothing would feel so good.
Although there were a number of songs on Episode 2’s soundtrack, nothing stood out. Silence made me think of the Sunday’s album Static and Silence. This was the last album released by the band. I’ve already added Summertime to the playlist, so here is Cry, the last single they ever released.
This song is bottled melancholy with a side of nostalgia.

And I'm standing on a platform
Now I'm staring from a train
And all the trees roll back beside but I'm so oblivious
To the dark to the light
It's all the same
You gave me so much
And now it's of the earth
And it makes me cry
And it makes me cry
It makes me cry
It can make me cry
And you're standing here beside me
In a picture in a frame
And your voice could never fade it's so familiar
Things you said in my head
Every day
You gave me so much
And now it's of the earth
And it makes me cry
And it makes me cry
It makes me cry
It can make me cry
You're with me so much
Though you're never with me anymore
And it makes me cry
And it makes me cry
And it makes me cry
It can make me cry
Hoo, and it makes me cry
And it makes me cry
Yeah, and it makes me cry
It can make me cry
I watched Ripple in its entirety too and plan to rewatch as I’m sure I missed interesting quotes like the one you shared…it was good, wasn’t it? I really liked it. Happy New Year to you and yours! 💖

Ripple oh my god I’ve been telling everyone I know to watch it, I’m sooo glad, thanks so much for including it in your blog or I might have missed it!
I have this song downloaded and it came on in the car the other day and I thought hmmm…this would’ve been so good somewhere in an episode of Ripple…idk if the link works but would you pretty please listen to it?! They’re a Canadian band who were super popular in the late 80’s/early 90’s…one of anthems from my teenage years!
In case the link doesn’t work (it’s from Apple music) the band is called Blue Rodeo and the song is After the Rain, but make sure it’s the one from the album Casino, not the other version, which is way too slow in my opinion https://music.apple.com/ca/album/after-the-rain/567020308?i=567021217

Ripple is really good, isn’t it? I’m watching it a second time and picking up on details that I missed the first time. I’m glad you enjoyed it, too.
Thanks for the recommendation! I didn’t know this band until now. Great song. I went down a little bit of a rabbit hole and listened to their other stuff. I’m surprised I didn’t hear them on the radio here in the states.
Wishing you a wonderful, joyful 2026!

Yeah i’ll shut up about it now lol but i really loved it!
It is too bad Blue Rodeo never “made it” outside of Canada, but they will always be superstars in my eyes 😍

I love that show! 👌🏼💕
You don’t owe anyone a highlight reel of your life.
I’m surrounded by travel stories at work, a lot of bragging. And while I love to travel and dream of backpacking around Europe someday, I also understand my current priorities. Some dreams are meant to be saved for later. Choosing rest, stillness, and doing nothing is not laziness—it’s necessary. Our brains and bodies need space to breathe.

Happy New Year! 🎉

We recently burned through ‘Ripple.’ What a show! We truly enjoyed it. Great music on it, which is an automatic win, amirite?
It’s astonishing to me how some people are at the ready with unsolicited (and unwelcome) advice, whether directly or in the form of questions. It can actually be hurtful when they are unaware of all the reasons why we are in a particular situation or phase. “You do you” seems like a good answer if the ten-second pause doesn’t clue them in.
There was a point toward the end of my career where I was so burned out, I was desperate to leave. I probably should have for my sake and my family’s, but a new role made for a nice, easy transition going out on a high note. I think what you did was very smart.
Happiness, health and prosperity to you and yours in 2026!

Hi Steve,
I appreciate your comments. I like the You do You advice. I need to take that into account more. I’m with you on the unsolicited advice though. Geez…
I could relate to the burnout you mentioned. Sometimes it’s easy to just get sucked in and stay on that hamster wheel. I was happy to hear you were able to land a transitional role and end your career the right way. I’m sure there was deep appreciation for your hard work and leadership. Well done.
Wishing the same to you in 2026!

Wow, you’ve really been cranking out material! Sorry I missed so much, I took a little break from WP for Christmas.
I had to read your earlier post to find out about Ripple. It sounds really intriguing and one for the TBW list.
Re: “the pause”… wow my friend, that seems simple, but it’s hard (at least for me) to pull off. I always feel the need to fill the dead air with words, but sometimes a silence is a thunderous reply.
And I’m glad you find peace with the “mug of the day” program 😎
Hope your 2026 is amazing! 😎🏄🏻♂️🙏
