  1. Love this–and I learned something new about a comic strip that’s always resonated with me. I have learned to live with the belief that “I am what I am” after nearly killing myself 40+ years ago trying to be what people expected. I have David Bowie to thank for that revelation. Kudos to him and to Calvin and Hobbs.

  2. Wonderful write-up here. Wow, you and I are very similar… though I think I had slightly more Calvin in my 20s. It’s great to be in a place of better self-acceptance… I guess we have to go however long before we arrive at it, hoping those we’ve influence might benefit from hearing of the bumps in our journeys and what we learned along the way. I also appreciated inclusion of the Wisdom of Popeye.

    1. From your blog and comments, I’ve gleaned that we’ve been down similar paths and share some commonality in our outlook in life. Self acceptance can be a challenging thing. I still waffle back and forth at times. Thanks for the Popeye comment. Only a few of us grey hairs will catch on to that reference!

  3. Wow! What a great fact about Calvin & Hobbs! That was my grandpa’s favorite cartoon. I haven’t read it in years because I don’t subscribe to a newspaper anymore. I love that your brother creates Calvin & Hobbs art for his Christmas cards. I bet your family loves to get them!

    1. Same here. It’s been awhile since I subscribed to a newspaper. I haven’t read comics in years.

We’re pretty amazed he’s kept it up all these years. It takes a lot of thought and time to come up with the message and then creating illustrations. He’s a busy guy with family and career. But he enjoys creating it every year.

  4. Love the idea of such a personalized Christmas card every year, and interesting to learn the history. It feels like one of those obvious-in-retrospect things, since who is named Hobbs? 😀
