I was relaxing at the pool when two little kids came by and decided to chat with me. One was 5 and the other was 3. He sheepishly said a few words at first and I replied,
OMG, that’s so cool, dude.
And that opened the floodgates. He started babbling away non-stop. His sister, not wanting to miss out on all the fun, came by and introduced herself as Borra. Almost like the place, but with two Rs instead of one, she said. They chattered non-stop for about ten minutes and I threw in an occasional No way! or So cool! Even though they did all the talking, I was thoroughly entertained. And then all of a sudden, they got up, waived goodbye and ran away.
After a long day at work, that was the perfect brief encounter to lift my spirits. I told my wife when I returned home and she smiled ear to ear. Too bad they were only visiting for spring break. It would have been fun to run into them again for another chat.
From our brief chat, I learned the kids were from Canada. So I did a search for bands from their homeland and learned Nickelback is Canadian. I never bought any of their CDs, but I did like How You Remind Me. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one.
“How You Remind Me” was only the fifth song by a Canadian group hit #1 on the US Hot 100.
A wildly popular song that covered a range of formats, “How You Remind Me” was the most-played song of 2002 on US radio stations. It was also the most-played radio song in the US during the first decade of the 21st century, with over 1.2 million spins.
Cool little kids. Cool Canadian band. Both a nice surprise.

Never made it as a wise man
I couldn't cut it as a poor man stealing
Tired of livin' like a blind man
I'm sick of sight without a sense of feeling
And this is how you remind me
This is how you remind me of what I really am
This is how you remind me of what I really am
It's not like you to say sorry
I was waitin' on a different story
This time I'm mistaken
For handing you a heart worth breakin'
And I've been wrong, I've been down
Been to the bottom of every bottle
These five words in my head
Scream, "Are we havin' fun yet?"
Yet, yet, yet, no, no
Yet, yet, yet, no, no
It's not like you didn't know that
I said, "I love you," and I swear I still do
And it must have been so bad
'Cause livin' with me must have damn near killed you
And this is how you remind me of what I really am
This is how you remind me of what I really am
It's not like you to say sorry
I was waitin' on a different story
This time I'm mistaken
For handing you a heart worth breakin'

No, no
I do like Nickelback, wouldn’t say I love them but some of their songs are good, I do like this one! Here in Canada, for some reason we are really divided on Nickelback, a lot of people love to hate them 🤷🏻♀️

You know, when I was searching for songs, I was reading how polarizing they were. I was so shocked. I just know the songs they played on the radio so I don’t have a dog in the hunt, but the feelings are pretty strong.

Yeah it’s so weird…but i guess in Canada we don’t have anything bigger or better to argue about lol 😂

Charming story! I love the girl’s explanation of her name. It’s nice that kids do still talk to strangers, on occasion. You must be a very warm and non-scary adult. 😊

They were pretty cute. They asked me a lot about my favorites. I particularly liked the girls explanation of her name, too.

Cool story. And I was just about to drop in the same comment CJ left about our country’s views on Nickelback! 😂

I was surprised to hear how polarizing they were. I find that really interesting. I get a water down vibe over here with Hootie and the Blowfish. I’ve always liked Hootie. But I used to hear the eye roll others make sometimes. I’m not sure it’s at the same level as Nickelback in Canada though. That seems like something else.

I think there is a bit of a parallel with Hootie, though perhaps our country’s polarity on Nickelback is a bit more extreme. It’s weird, really.
