My Gen X Playlist: Give You My Lovin – Mazzy Star

I’m not a TV or movie buff. I don’t have an eye for filmmaking. I can’t tell you the cinematic genius of a scene. I just like what I like.

What I do like, is a great monologue. And there are certain monologues I go to when my mood draws me in close. They call to me. And I enjoy how they ooze what I’m feeling.

I came home from a long day. I left at 6:45 in the morning, battled an hour and forty five minute drive in traffic. Five long meetings back to back. Afterwards, a company dinner, then an hour long drive home. I walked in the door, plopped myself on the couch a little beat.

Then, I thought about Raymond Reddington’s monologue from The Blacklist. It encapsulated exactly how I was feeling. I watched it three times and it wrapped around me like a warm blanket. I love the last few lines.

Most of all, I want to sleep. I want to sleep like I slept as a boy. Give me that. Just one time.

James Spader’s delivery is so good. Man, I love this.

I was thinking of songs about sleep and I was tempted to use Asleep by the Smiths, but that felt a little too dark and I didn’t want to go there. I searched sleep playlist suggestions and quite a few people recommended any song by Mazzy Star. I’ve already added a few of their songs to the playlist but there always is room for one more.

Someone described their music as slow, hazy dream pop. I totally get it. It’s got so much texture. Here’s Give You My Lovin. I love the guitar that hits 25 seconds into the intro and then chills in the background for the rest of the song. Hope Sandoval’s vocals and vibe are amazing, but that guitar makes this song so much better. Damn, that’s good.

This music makes me feel like my soal mate is sitting next to me even tho I’ve been alone my whole life.

The unique dreamy ballads of Hope Sandoval and Mazzy Star stand the test of time. They are timeless in fact. Beautiful gems that I’ve cherished for years now. I go back to them again and again. They help me get through life. Grateful I am.

  1. That sounds like a hellish day. And the commute, my oh my. I was pretty fortunate – mine could take an hour in the car if traffic was bad, or about 15-20 minutes by bike anytime.

    Nice song selection… that’ll put you at ease after a marathon day. Love Mazzy Star.

      1. Oh, I’m happy for you. That would be a brutal trip every day. The whole ‘telecommuting’ thing is hard for me to grasp. It wasn’t a thing when I was working nine years ago… sometimes I feel like a dinosaur!

      2. I’ve resisted working from home for years. When Covid hit, there wasn’t a choice. Now I wouldn’t have it any other way.

        I know the dinosaur feeling. I work with a lot of younger folk. Sometimes I’m the oldest guy in the room. lol

  2. Omgsh yes, is every mornings commute like that?! That’s crrrrazy to me lol, my “commute” is not even long enough to get to the chorus of a song lol

  4. Wow. That is a great monologue. I liked the part about Siena and Paris, but the whole thing is so good. It made me look up the writer of The Blacklist: Jon Bokenkamp is his name. And now you’ve got me thinking about great monologues that have stayed with me.

    1. Spader did a good job on that one. He’s got a lot of range. Ive seen him in a number of quirky roles and he plays somewhat of a villainous one in the Blacklist. That just reminded me when he played that douche in Pretty in Pink. Lol. I wonder if that movie stood the test of time. Great soundtrack for sure.

      I’d be interested in hearing any monologues you like. I think they are so theatrical and so cool when done well. Such a spotlight. Must be an actors dream come true.

      1. I had the Pretty in Pink soundtrack album. So good.
        The monologue of recent years that stuck with me is the America Ferrera one in the Barbie movie.
