My Gen X Playlist: August and Everything After – The Counting Crows

I recently started having my Saturday morning coffee outside. I brew a cup and sit just outside our front door. I like to come out early before the neighborhood wakes up. Yes, it’s a little cooler in the morning, but I like the morning chill.

What I noticed the most are the birds. There is a huge assortment that fly from tree to tree. I learned the smallest ones have the loudest voices. I like the thought of that. They seem so happy to begin their day. Their joy easily rubs off on me. I should try sitting out here during the week. I may give that a try.

There are a lot of good bird songs. I’ve already added a few to the playlists:

Three Little Birds – Bob Marley

Songbird – Fleetwood Mac

Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream) – Icicle Works

Murder of One – Counting Crows

I know I’m trying hard not to repeat songs on the playlist. But as I sit outside, I’m thinking about the Counting Crows and August and Everything After. I’m glad they eventually recorded this song, so many years after they released their first album.

The debut album “August and Everything After” was released on September 14, 1993, and did not include the title track, which was famously left unfinished

  4. You know a musician has made it huge when they can hire the London Symphony Orchestra to back them up! It works though. Doesn’t feel too indulgent. His really strong vocal carries it well. I wonder how much one session with all those pros costs?

    1. So true. It’s not every day you get to perform with the London Symphony!

      I really like the swell of the orchestra. The thought of the orchestra tapping their bows at the end is cool. I’ve always liked the title of the album because it seemed like it was open to personal interpretation.

  7. You’ve just inspired me to create a playlist of songs with birds in the title. I already have a playlist of bird songs, songs with birds in them.

    I’m so grateful for birds; they’re the soundtrack to my life.

    1. That sounds like a fun playlist!

      I never really paid too much attention to the birds before. When I lived in the city, they must have been drowned out. Now that I’m in suburbia, I’ve been noticing them more.

  8. The morning birds are going crazy here too. Mostly sparrows and finches. I like ‘Birds’ by David Olney a lot. It’s sort of plodding on first listen, almost a bedside lullaby, but it sticks with me.

  9. I love the sound of birds… it’s just returned here after many months without. On long bike rides, there’s a bird with a wonderful song I hear when I reach my farthest point away from home.

    I didn’t know this song; it sounds slightly different from others of theirs I know.

    1. It was the title of their first album. They didn’t include the song on the record because it was unfinished at the time. They finished and recorded the song 25 years later. It’s always been a mystery to me, until I found this a few years ago.

      Cool that you hear and recognize a bird singing on your long rides. I like hearing stories like that.
