The earliest book that I remember reading was Where the Wild Things Are. I remember the illustrations more than anything. What comes to mind is Max being crowned king and dancing with the wild things. It’s hard to believe the book is over 60 years old.
I was curious about the themes of the book. I found this interesting article: 7 Life Lessons of Where the Wild Things Are.
- Don’t judge someone by his or her appearance.
- There’s a wild thing in all of us – and that’s ok.
- There is immense power in imagination.
- There’s always time in life to let loose.
- Sometimes, there’s no place like home.
- Your parents will always have your back, even if they don’t seem like it.
- Love with everything you got.
That’s quite a few life lessons packed into a 40 page book, with many pages containing illustrations only without any words. After I read the article, I get it. Some life lessons don’t require a boatload of words.
The song choice wasn’t a difficult one. I looked at others, though. This one fit too well. Here is Wild Thing by the Troggs.
The style of music exemplified in this song became known as “Caveman Rock.” The Troggs is short for “troglodyte” (meaning “cave dweller”), which helped bolster this image.
If I’m being 100% honest, I never knew who sang this iconic song. I just always sang along. Don’t judge, please. As an added bonus, I even learned a new word, too. Let’s see if I can weasel in troglodyte into a conversation this weekend. Vegas odds are saying no. They might be right.

“Where the wild things are” is one of my old-time favorite children’s books! Not so much for the story, but because the illustrations are just out of this world!
I took a children’s lit class in college, and it is stunning to learn how much subtext is going on: not just with the illustrations, but even with the actual wording the authors choose
