It’s difficult to really comment on this one. I don’t have any expectation for reader loyalty. It’s only an anonymous blog. I do appreciate people who stop by, give a read or two and enjoy the music.
I remember a colleague once told me that the secret to happiness is to have low expectations. At first I didn’t quite understand what he meant. If he was talking about lowering my expectations of myself, then I had to disagree. I didn’t see how that would work.
What he meant was we should temper our expectations in life. If we always live our lives expecting the very best, we’re just setting ourselves up for a fall. Not everything goes as planned or lives up to the hype. And we should expect things to occasionally fall off a cliff. Instead, why not appreciate what comes our way, the good and the bad. Makes sense.
So, subscriber loyalty? Nope. No expectations. Only appreciation. Come and go as you please. I’m just happy I’m not talking to myself in a vacuum, also pretending to be the other side of the conversation answering myself back in a slightly different voice. That would be weird. I appreciate you stopping by and saving me from that embarrassing situation. Thank you.
The Stone Temple Pilots released a greatest hits album entitled Thank You. I thought I’d pull a song from that album for today. Here is Vasoline. Other than the album title, this song doesn’t have any connection to the prompt. It’s just a good song with a lot of guitar.

One time a thing occurred to me
What's real, and what's for sale?
Blew a kiss and tried to take it home
Isn't you, isn't me
Search for things that you can't see
Going blind, out of reach
Somewhere in the Vasoline
Two times and it has rendered me
Punch drunk and without bail
Think I'd be safer all alone
Flies in the Vasoline we are
Sometimes it blows my mind
Keep getting stuck here all the time
Isn't you, isn't me
Search for things that you can't see
Going blind, out of reach
Somewhere in the Vasoline
You'll see the look and you'll see the lies
You'll eat the lies, and you will.
Flies in the Vasoline we are
Sometimes it blows my mind
Keep getting stuck here all the time
It isn't you, isn't me
Search for things that you can't see
Going blind, out of reach
Somewhere in the Vasoline.
Someone recently told me that subscribers on a blog like WordPress are essentially a “vanity statistic“.
Yes, I have to admit that it’s cool to build it up and impressive email list. But WordPress even gives you stats on how many people actually open that email and how many of those people who open the email bothered to go ahead and click on the link.
I think that today, especially with tablets and smartphones, it’s so much easier for people to just click on things I want to read. I don’t know that readers necessarily feel the need or the obligation to subscribe to a blog anymore. So I think that the statistic is becoming less and less relevant.
Personally, I have about 700 subscribers out of accumulated over 14 years. And I’m sure that most of those don’t even use a WordPress anymore, or those email addresses are just dumping grounds for spam.

I think the difference between our blogs is you have a message that people can gain from. In addition to that, you’ve invested time on a podcast. Pretty cool platform. Keep it up.

Thanks for the kind words!
Personally, I think you have one of the most unique formats for a blog that I’ve come across! I love the way that you respond to prompts, bring your own experiences into it and weave all of that together with music from our generation.
I haven’t looked recently, but are you still updating the playlist? And is that one available on Spotify?

Thanks! Yes, still updating the playlist on Spotify.

I think you were the first person to like and comment on my posts back in 2023! Thank you! That kept me posting, even when I thought my words were disappearing somewhere in the universe.

I was just starting out back then, too! Your reads and comments definitely help me make my 365 day goal. Many thanks!

The feeling is mutual! The biggest surprise to blogging is being a part of a community. I’m glad we crossed paths. I’ve enjoyed your blog and look forward to your posts. I’ve been both entertained and appreciative the thought provoking content. Thank you!

I just realized today that you’ve been sharing your Spotify playlist this whole time. I just followed you! Isn’t it funny what we notice—and what we completely miss—even when it’s sitting right in front of us every day?

Well said. I’ve been at this for two decades, starting on Blogspot around 2005 and then moving to WordPress in 2008. My stats used to matter until I realized something: I’m not in it to make a living nor to sell anything. My rewards have come in meeting some really wonderful people I never would have met otherwise, and connecting in real life.

Totally agree. I couldn’t have expressed it better myself.

My readers keep me writing. I hope it’s a circular construct!

I started out writing a blog as a means to record our travels, to sometimes vent an opinion and to try and help myself and others navigate midlife. I can’t lie, it’s nice when people drop by and read something I’ve written. It still astounds me how many different nationalities that I attract.
Interaction is still fairly new to me but I’m enjoying this additional benefit.

I agree. The biggest surprise for me is the blogging community. I thought I was going to press send and my blog post would end up in a vacuum somewhere in the universe. It’s been nice meeting and interacting with other bloggers.
