My Gen X Playlist: Vasoline – Stone Temple Pilots

  1. Someone recently told me that subscribers on a blog like WordPress are essentially a “vanity statistic“.

Yes, I have to admit that it’s cool to build it up and impressive email list. But WordPress even gives you stats on how many people actually open that email and how many of those people who open the email bothered to go ahead and click on the link.

I think that today, especially with tablets and smartphones, it’s so much easier for people to just click on things I want to read. I don’t know that readers necessarily feel the need or the obligation to subscribe to a blog anymore. So I think that the statistic is becoming less and less relevant.

Personally, I have about 700 subscribers out of accumulated over 14 years. And I’m sure that most of those don’t even use a WordPress anymore, or those email addresses are just dumping grounds for spam.

      1. Thanks for the kind words!

Personally, I think you have one of the most unique formats for a blog that I’ve come across! I love the way that you respond to prompts, bring your own experiences into it and weave all of that together with music from our generation.

I haven’t looked recently, but are you still updating the playlist? And is that one available on Spotify?

    1. The feeling is mutual! The biggest surprise to blogging is being a part of a community. I’m glad we crossed paths. I’ve enjoyed your blog and look forward to your posts. I’ve been both entertained and appreciative the thought provoking content. Thank you!

  2. I just realized today that you’ve been sharing your Spotify playlist this whole time. I just followed you! Isn’t it funny what we notice—and what we completely miss—even when it’s sitting right in front of us every day?

  3. Well said. I’ve been at this for two decades, starting on Blogspot around 2005 and then moving to WordPress in 2008. My stats used to matter until I realized something: I’m not in it to make a living nor to sell anything. My rewards have come in meeting some really wonderful people I never would have met otherwise, and connecting in real life.

  4. I started out writing a blog as a means to record our travels, to sometimes vent an opinion and to try and help myself and others navigate midlife. I can’t lie, it’s nice when people drop by and read something I’ve written. It still astounds me how many different nationalities that I attract.

Interaction is still fairly new to me but I’m enjoying this additional benefit.

    1. I agree. The biggest surprise for me is the blogging community. I thought I was going to press send and my blog post would end up in a vacuum somewhere in the universe. It’s been nice meeting and interacting with other bloggers.
