I was craving something sweet. I’ve been pretty diligent about not buying junk food recently. Still, I was regretting not dropping that package of Oreos into my basket the other day.
I was too tired to jump in my car to get something to satisfy my craving. I searched the frig and freezer twice and came up empty both times.
I walked into the pantry and looked around. All the way in the back corner on a lower shelf I found a hidden box, tucked away. A big smile came across my face when I saw it was a cake mix. The only problem was the expiration date. August 2021. It must have been left over from our Covid grocery haul.
My wife looked at me side eyed. I don’t know, she said. That’s pretty old. Throw it away.
I rationalized dry goods don’t have an expiration date. Where I got that nugget of truth, I couldn’t tell you. Alternative facts? Maybe. But to me, it made common sense. Plus, I’ve got an iron stomach. I wasn’t worried.
I did compromise, though. I threw out the package of sugary powder needed to make the frosting. I was trying to appear reasonable. My wife wasn’t buying it.
After I mixed all the ingredients, something didn’t look right. The consistency seemed too watery and it was a strange off yellow color. I refused to listen to the voice of reason in my head or admit defeat after I was so adamant about making it. 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Let’s go.
The verdict? I’d say I was 25% on target versus 75% for my wife. Not a good scorecard. The taste was off. The texture was off. It just looked off. It was borderline edible, though. Should I eat it?
There are two things that are true. First, I’m a guy. I can eat almost anything. And second, I didn’t want to admit I was completely wrong. So, I’ve been eating it. With a smile, might I add. I’m a quarter way in, but I think it’s time to throw in the towel. I’m just trying to find the right words to let myself off the hook and be able to walk away gracefully. I could simply state the obvious – it’s not healthy eating an entire cake by myself. While true, my wife won’t buy it. She’s not stupid. Either I admit defeat or eat the entire cake to back up all my big talk. Damn. What a no win situation.
I was thinking about songs about sugar or sweets. Sweetness Follows by REM came to mind. I love that song, but it’s dark and moody. I’ve been watching Riverdale on Netflix so Sugar Sugar by the Archie’s struck a chord. Then I remembered a mashup of Maroon 5’s Sugar. Mashups remind me of that movie Pitch Perfect. I’ve always thought they are pretty creative. Here is Megan Davies’ mashup of See You Again / Love Me Like You Do / Sugar. Not a bad arrangement.

Sorry your sweet tooth didn’t get the treat it was craving. There are some super easy healthy no bake oat energy bites that you can try to make. I can share a few recipes with you if you want.
I like the acoustic version of “Love me like you do” but I still prefer Ellie Goulding’s version of this song.

Sweetly done mash-up. 🙂
“Dry goods don’t expire” is not altogether wrong (there’s some leeway), but 2021?!?! Even for a guy. hahah

Well it’s not only a guy thing lol, my oldest daughter will eat pretty much anything, no matter how old/expired it is. I always tease her she has guts like a raven.
