What part of your routine do you always try to skip if you can?
My great uncle lived to be almost 100. We once asked him what his secret was for a long healthy life. He attributed it to two daily things. Oatmeal and walking. Simple advice and the proof was in the pudding.
Walking was an easy one. That’s not something new in my routine. Breakfast, on the other hand, used to be something I often skipped. In an attempt at a more heart healthy diet, I added oatmeal into my routine. At first, it wasn’t too thrilling. In fact, the exact opposite. But I was determined to give this a shot. I began experimenting with different fruit against the blank canvas. Here is a quick rundown of my results.
Blueberries, apples, raisins, raspberries, pears, and oranges (surprising, I know) are great. A spoonful of almond butter with honey isn’t bad either.
Persimmons, figs, cherries, kiwi and grapes – meh.
Watermelon – that’s a big no. No surprise, but after the oranges were a hit, I had to at least give it a try.
Typically I top it off with sliced bananas to give it a nice taste and texture.
My apologies. Oatmeal is not a very exciting topic, but it was a game changer for me and contributed to my thirty pound weight loss in four months. I’m a believer.
The only breakfast related song I know is Deep Blue Something’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s. A one hit wonder, yet I still enjoy the song whenever I hear it. I lump this in the same category as Men Without Hat’s Safety Dance. Fun no matter when it comes on.
Deep Blue Something lead singer Todd Pipes was inspired to write this song after seeing Audrey Hepburn in the film Roman Holiday, but he thought “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” would be a better title.
“As the song had Breakfast in the title, radio stations thought it would be genius to have us on at breakfast time. We’d be up till 3 a.m. and they’d wonder why we were pissed off playing at 6am.”
– Songfacts
OK, not a song about oatmeal, or breakfast for that matter. But it’s definitely a catchy tune. Well, maybe not as a 6 am wake up call, that is.

You say that we've got nothing in common
No common ground to start from
And we're falling apart
You'll say the world has come between us
Our lives have come between us
But I know you just don't care
And I said "What about Breakfast at Tiffany's?"
She said, "I think I remember that film
And as I recall, I think we both kinda liked it."
And I said "Well, that's one thing we've got."
I see you - the only one who knew me
And now your eyes see through me
I guess I was wrong
So what now? It's plain to see we're over
And I hate when things are over
When so much is left undone
And I said "What about Breakfast at Tiffany's?"
She said, "I think I remember that film
And as I recall, I think we both kinda liked it."
And I said "Well, that's one thing we've got."
You say that we've got nothing in common
No common ground to start from
And we're falling apart
You'll say the world has come between us
Our lives have come between us
Still I know you just don't care
And I said "What about Breakfast at Tiffany's?"
She said, "I think I remember that film
And as I recall, I think we both kinda liked it."
And I said "Well, that's one thing we've got."

Cinnamon and raisins are usually my toppings of choice.

I was eating a lot of oatmeal for awhile. Now you’ve reminded me, I’ll have to get back to it. I’ll try with oranges, thx!

I tried the oranges on a whim. I actually add the fruit while it’s cooking instead of a topping. Throw a few oranges in and let me know what you think.

Today, I had oatmeal with watermelon. It was ok! 😅 but I added slices of a banana to make it taste better.
I also tried a watermelon oatmeal smoothie, and it was good. here’s the recipe:
▢ 3 cups cubed seedless watermelon
▢ 1 cup frozen strawberries
▢ ½ cup vanilla Greek yogurt
▢ ½ cup almond milk (or other milk of choice)
Add the watermelon, strawberries, yogurt, and milk to a high powered blender, and blend until smooth.
Bonne appétit. 😊

I’ve also been eating oatmeal regularly and walking. Great for heart health! I like to put apples, almonds, bananas and cinnamon in mine. Something else my doctor told me to add is a spoonful of slippery elm bark powder. I know, sounds disgusting but it gives the oatmeal a nutty flavor and is good for digestion.

Whoa… I’ve never heard of that before! I’m going to look that up. I add flaxseed and chia seeds. There is room for one more!

That picture up top there looks just like my breakfast. Blueberries and oats every morning. I’m a creature of habit. But sometimes I like to mix it up. Sometimes I have pumpkin with almondmilk yogurt, sugar free syrup, sweetener, vanilla extract and a little pumpkin spice. The pureed pumpkin is kind of pricey compared to oats though, so ultimately I always go back to oats.

Porridge (Oatmeal) and honey works for me. I’m still working as a whitewater raft guide at 68. Or perhaps it is the walk to the pub 🙂

Hey, the connection still works… it’s all breakfast! Have you tried a shake of cinnamon on your oats? They’re my almost-daily brekker, too. And a few chopped walnuts on top of the banana. Plus I cook them in a little oat milk. Delicious.
Great song and post, thank you for sharing!

I very much recommend a Mediterranean breakfast and taking ‘walking’ to the next level like power walk or jog. Think, olives (black or green), Feta cheese, fresh slices of crusty bread and (ok I’ll skip tomatoes, (cuz most of my friends go ugh!) if you really must crave for meat, go for spicy salami slices… Cheers

Thank you! Yes, I met with a nutritionist and she recommended the Mediterranean diet. I should try it out.

I think the song “I see fire” by Ed Sheeran is the song of the moment now. I feel the mood of the current state of the world is like that of the movie “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”. The movie ends with a cliffhanger, just like how the future is still waiting to be manifested in our current reality.

I love Breakfast At Tiffany’s, it’s a song oh so reminiscent for my husband and I. I was raised to be very Type A, and he was raised to be more Type B. I was sure that we weren’t alike but he just had to introduce me to a whole new way of living, then we found our happy, My parents hated him at first, they thought he was lazy and good for nothing, but over time he proved himself. They loved him in the end and they took him in like a part of the family.
Oatmeal sounds good, but I don’t know if I could before my morning swims, I think I would feel bloated. That being said, I did just find a recipe for healthy oatmeal flapjacks and weight loss is something that I am trying to achieve. You had me sold at “thirty pound weight loss” – congrats!

Oatmeal is my favorite, it’s super filling and stays with you for a long time. It also maintains a more balanced sugar control so that I’m not crashing by 10am. I like to add different things to doctor it up and keep it healthy with applesauce, flax, olive oil, cranberries, cinnamon, etc.

Applesauce… I haven’t tried that yet. Thanks, I’ll give it a try!
