In my leisure time I enjoy listening to music. I enjoy searching through YouTube for unique cover songs, acoustic versions or mashups of music I grew up with. Sometimes I’d find great versions from random amateur singers. During the Covid lockdown, many people started posting music online. One of my favorites is a family with two kids that covered The Smiths/Morrissey songs. Were they great singers? Not particularly, but I enjoyed watching them play and the looked like they were having so much fun. What a fun family.
Occasionally I find new music that I like. I came across Open Door by You+Me years ago. It’s a duet of Dallas Green and Alecia Moore. When I first heard it, Moore’s voice sounded so familiar. It turns out, Alecia Moore is Pink (I’m probably the last to know this). I love this song and I find myself coming back from time to time. The words and harmonies are wonderful.
Moore and Green met through mutual friends several years prior to their collaboration in 2014. The first time they sang together Green had asked Moore to sing with him at one of his shows. They remained friends and Green opened several shows for Moore in the U.K. Moore had considered singing acoustic ballads, and as friends the two had considered collaborating for several years. In March 2014, their schedules allowed them to get together and compose original songs. They had written musical nuggets in advance, and their debut album Rose Ave. took shape within a week. The artists attributed their quick progress to the freedom from usual production pressures and the joy of making music together. The name of the duo, You+Me, is based on the two friends wanting to sing together.

This song is great. It describes a feeling that many can’t express or have trouble expressing. When I heard it for the first time I was shocked how it described how I felt with my parents and family so well. I was on leave and had this album on in the car when this song came on. My mom was in the back seat so I sang it to her and it made her cry. Up until that point I was never able to express that and for that I am grateful. Thank you.

I recall
A time when you and I would talk a little more
To each other face to face, through love and war
When I knew there'd always be an open door for me
But I know, that home is just some place I always leave behind
It's with me everywhere I go and I close my eyes
And I know someday I'll catch you in the by and by, I know
I know
Dear mother
I know I have been away for far too long
Dear mother
Hope you'll understand it when you hear this song
Cause you taught me how to be right in a world gone wrong
Gone wrong
But it ain't
It ain't how long you live, it's how you live your life
Burn bright until the grave don't shy away from the light
Cause I won't waste my days
I will use my time
My time, my time
Dear father
I know I have been away for far too long
Dear father
I know you'll understand it when you hear this song
Cause you taught me how to be right in a world gone wrong
Gone wrong
I recall
A time when you and I would talk a little more
To each other face to face, through love and war
Well I hope there will always be an open door for me
You enjoy listening to music? Shocked! Shocked I am. ^_^

I don’t know where I would be without music! It’s the soundtrack to my life. I like how you find obscure covers of songs and songs I’ve never heard before. Thank you for sharing them with the rest of us.

Oh wow that Landslide/Everywhere mashup was just amazing! I was just telling my son the other day that when I was his age, my favorite thing was a radio and that I’d listen to music more than watch TV during the day – not that we had any programming interesting enough for a teen then since everything was at night and we all watched it together on the only TV in the house with rabbit ears and the “get up and change the channel” remote control version then lol

That is a pretty amazing mashup. I think the two are sisters.
Yes… tv before the days of cable and streaming. We had that “same remote” in our house, too! How spoiled we’ve become!

It’s definitely a life our kids have no idea about. We’ve now become our parents as we talk about “back in our day…” or “when I was your age…”
A local radio station plays Casey Kasem’s top 40 every Sunday and last week they played the hits from the week of Jan 23, 1980, and it was scary that I knew every song!

It certainly brought all the memories back! My first official job while in college was at a pop radio station as a newscaster and I’d work Sundays where they’d play the tapes in the afternoon. Listeners had no clue that it was from weeks earlier (I lived in the Philippines then) and taped so they’d call hoping to speak with Casey.

That sounds like an interesting job. Did you want to go into broadcasting?

Back then I didn’t have plans to go into broadcasting. My major was Journalism and the head DJ was one of our professors. They had this contest one summer searching for a newscaster and on a dare me and my boyfriend joined and I was one of the two they picked to join the station. It was patterned after American radio stations so you had to be fluent and not have a strong local accent which worked in my favor since my stepdad was American and I got a lot of practice listening to Radio America with him and singing Broadway songs.
Upset my mom so much because in the Philippines, you don’t work while you’re in school, not if your parents can afford to pay for your education (“what will people think?”) but my dad was thrilled that I got a job that didn’t involve him pulling strings 😅
I stayed there for 2 years and after graduation, I thought I could apply for a TV newscaster position but since the position involved speaking in the local dialect (Visayan or Cebuano), I wasn’t fluent at all. Also turned out I have a face for radio 😂😂

What a cool unique experience. Sounds like you were meant to be a storyteller, whether it’s telling the news or with your published books. Good for you for following your passion. That’s great.

Thanks for all the great links in this post! You are a true music lover. I love the duet. Never heard it before. I also loved her with Nate Ruess on Just Give Me A Reason.

Nope, you’re the second to last one to find this out. Beautiful duet! Music is just the best.
