I miss playing poker with the guys. Back in our twenties, we’d have card games once or twice a month. Drinks, junk food and shit talking until the wee hours were all on our all-you-can-eat menu. It was more about hanging out with the guys and less about the poker game. The memories bring a smile to my face.
Over the years, lives expanded and we no longer had time to continue our poker games. Between marriage, kids, home and career, it’s not a shock this got pushed to the wayside. We talk about getting the guys together for a game, but I’m not quite so sure it will ever happen. And that’s OK. I’m sure they’d still be fun, but they may not live up to the hype of our heydays. Some things are best savored through nostalgia. This may be one of them.
In 2014, Mark Wahlberg starred in a remake of the 1974 film, The Gambler. One of the songs on the soundtrack was a cover of Radiohead’s Creep by Scala and Kolacny Brothers, a Belgian women’s choir. Although an interesting take, I prefer the original Radiohead version. Such a good song.
Although Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 5.5/10, I still like the film. But then again, I like cards and gambling and movies about cards and gambling. So this may not be everyone’s cup of tea. It’s a better bet to stick with a sure thing, like Radiohead’s Creep. That’s definitely a great song and a heck of a lot closer to a ten out of ten.

When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You're so fucking special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here
I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
When I'm not around
You're so fucking special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here
Oh, oh
She's running out again
She's running out
She run, run, run, run
Run
Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so fucking special
I wish I was special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here
I don't belong here
my life anthem…lol. jk. i ❤️radiohead.

Love the original version of Creep by Radiohead! I used to play this song on Guitar Hero with my son when he was a teenager. Good times!
I also enjoy playing cards, but usually not poker.

I love all card games. Usually at family gatherings, there may be some card game breaking out with the kids and adults. It’s become a family thing.

Doug has a standing Saturday night thing with a friend of his where they get together online and play video games. I guess that’s today’s equivalent of the poker games of yesteryear. Though I imagine that he would have played DnD rather than poker in his younger days. ^_^

All sound fun. I never played a lot of DnD, but I always thought it was cool.

The girls and I would have Sex and the City viewing nights where we’d just hang out and do nothing but eat chips, talk back at whatever Carrie and Samantha and the gang were up to. We also hung out for Mango Margarita Tuesdays after beach volleyball and boy, do I miss those nights. Now, we just “hang out” on FB and catch up with what our kids are up to, and leave the rest to nostalgia. There really is no going back and I guess that’s just part of growing older.

There is nothing like being young and hanging out with friends!

The choir version is kinda creepy, with those young girls singing those words so emotionlessly. Maybe it worked it for the film. Didn’t see it. Hope you get a buddy get together soon. Maybe Superbowl?

Yes, we always meet for the Super Bowl! It’s a good time!

Creepy ? To me lacking the creative guitar work of that song. Their version is boring

Yes, that too, but I did like the pianist with the choir. The original is best for sure!

I thought it was a little odd. It doesn’t quite fit. I don’t remember where it came in the movie, but I can’t imagine that changes my opinion of it. The original is better for sure.

Did you see the first comment on the YT video? “This song gives my depression a depression.” LOL. Finally a song I know! I discovered this in 2014 while on a trip to Alaska.
I have a 76yo friend who pretty much lives for poker. I’ve never met anyone like her. Just a fun-loving grandma who can’t get enough of gambling. And I don’t even think she is an addiction — she just loves the game.

What a terrific song. And I really like the choral version, very powerful and contemplative.
I didn’t keep up with my school mates… we grew apart for good pretty much in our 20s, and that’s okay. Going to school together was really all we had in common at a deeper level.

I remember those days of playing cards all night and walkong away with empty pockets, but now I still have empty pockets 45 years later. I still want, to play cards but hands are telling me NOOO, but I have found a way that works, and my hands thank me. Maybe I might end up winning a few hands.

All night poker games are the best. At our super bowl party, we talked about resurrecting them, but it’s difficult to get everyone together. We just settle for our annual Vegas trip instead!
