I’ve always enjoyed watching track and field. With the exception of the relay races, this is essentially an individual sport. Sure they add up team points at the end, but when you are competing out there, it’s just you. And when I mention an individual sport, I don’t mean it’s you against the other participants. Yes, they are out there, but they are mere window dressing. Because at the heart of it, track and field is a sport where you are competing against yourself. You can lose a race, but clock your best time ever, and still check the winner box. It’s all about achieving your personal record. If you happen to be invited to stand on the podium, well, that’s just icing on the cake. A faster time, a longer jump, a further distance. That’s where the challenge is at. Alone, it’s you versus you out there. And that’s pretty cool.
Live released I Alone in 1994. The actual meaning of the song? Your guess is as good as mine.
It’s no use arguing over the meaning of this tune because Kowalczyk thinks all of the various interpretations are valid. “It’s impossible to misinterpret that song,” he told Louder Sound. “People make it their own. I grew up as a fan of U2, REM, Peter Gabriel, and artists where I could sink my teeth into the lyric. When I hear ‘Where The Streets Have No Name,’ I don’t really know what the song means, but I don’t care. It takes me somewhere and just makes spiritual sense to me. And that’s what I think ‘I Alone’ does.”

Interpreting song lyrics also leans on individuality. Each interpretation a subjective reflection of life and personal feelings. There’s not always a clear winner, or a right or wrong. And there shouldn’t be. Not everything is a competition.

it's easier not to be wise
and measure these things by your brains
I sank into Eden with you
alone in the church by and by
I'll read to you here, save your eyes
you'll need them, your boat is at sea
your anchor is up, you've been swept away
and the greatest of teachers won't hesitate
to leave you there, by yourself, chained to fate
I alone love you
I alone tempt you
I alone love you
fear is not the end of this!
it's easier not to be great
and measure these things by your eyes
we long to be here by his resolve
alone in the church by and by
to cradle the baby in space
and leave you there by yourself chained to fate
oh, now, we took it back too far,
only love can save us now,
all these riddles that you burn
all come runnin' back to you,
all these rhythms that you hide
only love can save us now,
all these riddles that you burn yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh man, track and field is my jam! I ran the 400 meter dash and 4×4 relay in high school. You’re right, it’s an individual sport…perfect for introverts!
I like how you also identified interpreting song lyrics as an individual sport. More times than I care to admit, I belted out a song in the car and my kids were like, “Mom, that is not what they’re saying.” That’s only what they wish they would’ve said! 😂

Hahaha… keep singing! You do you!
400 meter is a tough race. And relays are always fun. I completed in the jumping events (high, long and triple jump). I grew up playing team sports, so competing in an individual sport was different and fun.

This is damn good! I was never the biggest fan of Live back in the day. Partly because of a girl I really liked, friendzoned me kind grew up and those guys personally. And she would talk about it almost incessantly. Drove me crazy. But this was a fun trip down memory lane, thank you for that. I do appreciate them more now, though.

Yeah, if I was friendzoned with this song as a reminder, I may turn the dial, too!

I don’t like watching track relays either. The handoff is too stressful. What if they drop the baton and ruin it for everyone?! I missed a lot of 90s music. You’re expanding my horizons with this one. Thx

You’re right. The handoffs are stressful. Timing is the key. Hope there are some new 90s songs you like.

I had totally forgotten about the band until I read this post. Then I started singing the lyrics immediately. It’s so weird, because my ex-boyfriend loved his band and I somehow put them out of my head. Coincidence? 🤔

Nah, no coincidence. Actually, totally understandable. Another blogger made a similar comment about someone from his past. Relating people to a band or a song can do that…

So strange. He really liked them and I totally blanked on that. I think in memory care facilities they use music to help the patients remember the old times. Something about music is integral to our memories.

This song is new to me; reminds me a lot of the grunge era. My favourite Olympic sport to watch? Road cycling, of course. Good job connecting the prompt to a story and song!

Yeah, it was the grunge era. I’ve watched the Tour de France, but not road cycling during the Olympics. I’ll give that one a try next time!
