My sister in law was over for dinner and the conversation shifted to our wedding. For some reason, the subject of our marriage certificate came up and we wondered out loud where ours was.
They should have mailed it to you after you applied for it with the state of Hawaii, she said.
There was this awkward silence as both my wife and I were contemplating the same thought. Did we forget to apply for our marriage license? Uh-oh.
We called my wife’s other sister in Hawaii and asked her if she went in person to apply for her license. Yes, of course, she said. Why? Didn’t you?
Crap. What an important detail to forget. My sisters in law both laughed and joked that we were not married and living in sin. It made me laugh a little at first until I started thinking about areas that may be an issue. We file our taxes as a married couple. A quick google search told me that the federal government might consider this fraud if we weren’t legally married. What the hell? And my wife is on my health insurance. A problem? Maybe.
Fortunately, my brother’s wife is an attorney and we gave her a call. She is a very calming influence and talked us off the ledge. No, we are not going to jail for fraud. Nor will my company pull our health insurance. She assured us we were married. Worse case scenario, we just need to figure out the paperwork. Plus, people only really needed their marriage certificate if there was an issue in dispute. We needed to contact the state to investigate.
We called and they said they couldn’t provide verification over the phone. We needed to show up in person or apply for a copy of our marriage certificate online with proper documentation. The online process would take eight weeks to get an answer. We applied. Everyday we expected a message notifying us there was nothing on file. It was a long, slow eight weeks. We checked the mail daily leading up to the deadline. And I’m happy to report we are legally married. Our officiant must have filed the paperwork on our behalf. What a relief!
I did a search for alternative rock wedding songs. There are a bunch of odd lists out there. Real head scratchers. I did find this one: Best Alternative Songs for Weddings: A Non-Traditional Playlist. I love both their 80’s and 90’s playlists. Some were just great songs, maybe not for a wedding though. As I perused the lists, there was one song that might fit. It was Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You, but covered by the Cranberries. Whoa. I searched YouTube hoping to find this obscure version. Although I couldn’t find it, I found another cover that is probably much better. Who knew Chris Cornell covered a Whitney Houston song. As I read the comments, it made more sense.
What gets lost in this over time because it’s such a great performance is that he performed this just days after Whitney Houston died. That’s why you hear the instant acknowledgment from the crowd. There was no fan fare, no announcement of a tribute, just this heartfelt nod to another great singer. This gets me emotional every time.

If I should stay
I would only be in your way
So I'll go but I know
I'll think of you every step of the way
And I will always love you
I will always love you
You
My darling, you
Mmm-mm
Bittersweet memories –
That is all I'm taking with me
So good-bye
Please don't cry:
We both know I'm not what you, you need
And I... will always love you
I... will always love you
You, ooh
I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you've dreamed of
And I'm wishing you joy and happiness
But above all this, I wish you love
And I... will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I, I will always love you
You
Darling, I love you
I'll always
I'll always love you
Ooh
Ooh
So, I guess you’re cancelling the bachelor party?
Whitney Houston is one of many to cover this Dolly Parton composition. My son, with his deep baritone voice, used to cover it with his outlaw country band and somehow managed the high notes! A great song.

Hahaha… maybe another Vegas trip if I had another one!
Whoa.. that sounds so cool. Does your son have a clip of that cover on YouTube? I wouldn’t mind seeing it.

Ha!
No, sorry, I don’t think so. And I mostly don’t record his shows so as to “be in the moment” but sometimes I’ve recorded individual songs, though I don’t think I ever did with this one, unfortunately.

What’s the name of his band again?

His old band was Kieran West and his Buffalo Band. His channel is at https://youtube.com/@kieranwest9856?si=TvPWmseiNOo7A1c3.
He also appeared on a few episodes of a show done locally by The Village Idiots.

I think you should host an anniversary party and celebrate your love for each other, and your marriage too. It’s a wonderful opportunity to mark and enjoy that special bond. 💕

Yes, you have to apply for it in person. 🤣 I never looked at ours when we got it in the mail. I just filled it away, but a few years ago I had to pull it out to prove Veronica Heintz is the same person as Veronica Hosking only to realize my name is spelled wrong on it.

I’ve spoken to other people since and most have no idea where there’s is. Everybody references something they signed at the ceremony, but that’s mostly not a legal binding document. Thank goodness our officiant slipped our official documents in! Lol

Did your wife change her last name? Because I needed the license to change my ss card.

No, she didn’t change her name. I was a little disappointed at first until she asked, “How would you feel if you had to change yours?” That put everything perspective. However, I have to give her a hard time every once in awhile….

Then this easily explains why you didn’t expect a license to come in the mail. I’ve been married for 30 years and it was still the norm for women to change their last name. But I did know a few people who did not do it.

Congrats on 30 years! Most people I know changed their names. Since my experience, I think either way is ok.

Phewwww… lol, “talked us off the ledge.” Glad neither of you looked one another, rubbed your chin and said “So we’re NOT married? Hmm, maybe we oughta pause here and think…” 😉
Awesome song, so filled with raw emotion. Can’t believe she’s been gone 14 years now 😢 Great post 👏

Hahaha… thank goodness it wasn’t a get out of jail free for my wife! Lol
I didn’t appreciate how amazing Houston’s voice was until I heard others try to sing her songs. Pretty amazing.

You crazy kids thinking you never actually got married 😂
And the song’s even more poignant when you think about Chris Cornell dying just a few years after Whitney. Too young, both.

So true. It’s heartbreaking hearing about people passing at such a young age. Especially when it’s so tragic.

OMG! That would have stressed me out! Glad it got figured out.
I never knew Chris Cornell covered this song. Wow. And he, Whitney, AND Dolores from The Cranberries are all gone. Sigh.

Yes, all so tragic. I still listen to the Cranberries fairly often. They hold a special place for me. I bought their debut CD when I lived abroad and it was my lifeline to home. The internet wasn’t invented yet, so I had to rely upon music to get me through some tough times. I lived an hour outside of Tokyo, so I listened to their CD almost from start to finish on my rides in to explore the city. When I was struggling to communicate everyday, listening to lyrics in English took the edge off. RIP, Dolores.
