My Gen X Playlist: Down by the Water – PJ Harvey

    1. I think the important thing is the connection, it doesn’t have to be sports. I see some connect through cooking, others through art or music. And I see that and think how special. My parents liked sports and it was probably easier tiring out 4 kids running around than having us bounce off walls and driving them crazy.

  1. My family as a whole was never really into sports, though my older brothers seemed more sporty than I was. Interesting song… one of the commenters thought it looked like a nightclub scene from a David Lynch film. That tracks. PJ is pretty cool.

    1. Thanks for your comment. I wasn’t familiar with the song and listened to both versions. Both are good. PJ’s seemed a heavier version. I looked on YouTube for other cover versions and it sent me to a compilation CD that it turns out I have in my collection. There’s a bunch of 90’s bands on a Leonard Cohen tribute CD called I’m Your Fan. House of Love has a cover version of this that’s not bad. There are other bands like the Pixies, REM and Ian McCulloch that have other covers. It’s not a bad compilation disk.

      1. Interesting! Cohen was such a great songwriter. There are so many covers of his songs to choose from. “Bad Sisters” was a dark comedy/drama about murder, so her version of Who By Fire was perfect for it.

  2. Our thing growing up was baseball in the culdesac… everybody had a few acres, so plenty of room for crushing one and kids running after a fly ball looking over their shoulders with no worries about busted windows.

Football, too…full contact as someone’s mom looked through the kitchen window, smiling. No protective gear. Everybody had irrigated lawns with these round concrete things that supported the sprinkler heads every 10’… so getting tackled almost always meant a knee, elbow or head landing on one with some kid on top of you …owwww… Good times 🤕😣😂

Basketball was mostly “horse” or one-on-one…again, full contact, no refs, lots of blatent fouls, elbows, getting knocked backwards onto the asphalt … more owwwwws…😂 Amazing we survived… 😆

    1. I love the nostalgia. Running, looking over your shoulder to catch a fly ball… tackles, skinned knees. A game of horse. We used to play pick up ball, 3 on 3. My buddy would say, “we can’t foul out. That means no easy shots down the lane.” Childhood is such a great time.

  3. It’s so cool that almost everyone in your family played basketball.
I played handball in college and I loved it. Now, I sometimes switch to international channels to watch a handball game.
Have fun watching baseball. I need to catch up with that too. I’ll be wishing you and the Angels luck while cheering on the Dodgers. 😉

  4. My Dad was very athletic…basketball, football, baseball, track, and golf. He had three sons, but unfortunately only the youngest one followed his footsteps into sports. He was just like my Dad, good at everything!

We have Spring Training games here in Phoenix, so my daughters and their families enjoy going to the games. My daughter admitted that she doesn’t really enjoy watching the game. She enjoys the nostalgia and culture surrounding America’s pastime. I agree.

  5. Like CJ, I read this wishing we’d been a sports family! Thanks for the song, since it took me to Mary’s comment and the second mention in two days of the show Bad Sisters. Maybe I should check it out. haha
