This is a tough one. I’m not quite sure how to answer this one. I haven’t met any tourists who have royally screwed things up on their travels to America.
For Americans who travel abroad, I always recommend eating the local foods. One of the fun parts of travel is tasting the culture. And even if you try something that you absolutely detest, at the very least, you have an interesting memory and good story to tell.
Under that vein, what foods can visiting tourists eat in America? A few come to mind:
1. New York style pizza
2. Chicago deep dish pizza
3. Maine lobster rolls
4. Philadelphia cheesesteaks
5. Texas BBQ
6. Alaskan king crab
7. Florida key lime pie
8. New England clam chowder
9. Napa Valley wine
10. Tennessee whiskey
I know there’s a whole host of foods I’m missing. If you have any suggestions, add your recommendations in the comments below.
I first tried Tennessee whiskey not in the US, but when I lived in Japan. And the decision to try it was purely economical. When we went out to the bars, I could drink ten or so beers. The dollar wasn’t as strong then as it is now and my bar tab was adding up. I found that I could drink two or three whiskeys and get the same effect at a fraction of the cost. Whiskey sometimes became my drink of choice.
The only whiskey song I know is Chris Stapleton’s Tennessee Whiskey. I’m not sure where I’ve heard this one, but it’s pretty good. Any other whiskey songs out there?
Used to spend my nights out in a barroom
Liquor was the only love I'd known
But you rescued me from reaching for the bottom
And brought me back from being too far gone
You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You're as sweet as strawberry wine
You're as warm as a glass of brandy
And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time
I've looked for love in all the same old places
Found the bottom of the bottle's always dry
But when you poured out your heart I didn't waste it
'Cause there's nothing like your love to get me high
You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You're as sweet as strawberry wine
You're as warm as a glass of brandy
And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time
[Instrumental]
You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You're as sweet as strawberry wine
You're as warm as a glass of brandy
And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time
You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
Tennessee whiskey
Tennessee whiskey
You're as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
Tennessee whiskey
Tennessee whiskey
I like this song!
I’ve had 6 and 7 in their respective locations and the next I’d like to try is the Maine Lobster Rolls!

I’m very only had a few in their respective locations, too. I agree with you! That lobster roll sounds delicious!

A quick Google search turns up a lot of lists – including a list of 105 songs about whiskey – Chris Stapleton has two on the list – https://discover.hubpages.com/entertainment/Songs-About-Whiskey. I haven’t listened to Chris Stapleton in a long time, I forgot how good he is…

I really missed chocolate chip cookies — like basic Tollhouse cookies— when I was abroad. Make sure they get some of those. Warm, if possible!

Middle child has been going on whiskey tastings while living in TN. Not my thing, but they seem to really enjoy the events.

Yes, whiskey is very popular in TN. I went to Pigeon Forge a few weeks ago, and I stopped by the Ole Smoky Whiskey shop not to buy anything from there but just because I was curious to look at their walls stacked up with bottles of whiskey and moonshine mixes.

This song is one of my favorites and I only discovered it about two years ago at a local concert. The guy singing it is Japanese and he did the best version of this song better than Stapleton, I think.

Great song! My favorite song about whiskey is “Whiskey” by Trampled by Turtles. I also like the Irish song Whiskey in the Jar. I’m not sure who the original artist is/was, but it’s been covered by lots of artists from traditional Irish bands to Metallica and The Grateful Dead. This was mentioned already, but I also like Whiskey Lullaby.

I’ve had them all but the lobster rolls (never been to Maine.) How about One is the Whiskey by Mike and the Moonpies? They’ve changed their name to Silverada now (I can’t imagine why) but they’re a great overlooked band.
