If you had a time machine and could send just one message to your past self, what would it say?
Easy. Buy Apple stock at their IPO. Then again, they first joined the stock market in 1980 and I was only 12 years old at the time. But a $292 investment would be worth over a million bucks today. Where do I buy a ticket for that time machine?
I only know a handful of Fiona Apple songs. Not enough to buy one of her CDs back in the day. She released an interesting cover of the Beatles’ Across the Universe. I like the music video as she calmly sings in the midst of chaos. It’s captivating. And one repeated line makes my mind return back to the prompt.
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Even if I successfully slipped myself that stock tip to buy Apple, there’s no guarantee I’d walk away with that cool mil today. Changing the future like that may send the universe into a tizzy, just like the chaos in that music video. The universe would probably enjoy pulling the rug out from under me by unleashing some type of counterbalance. Why mess with this in the first place, only to get my hopes dashed against the rocks? I think I’d like to change my answer please to something more meaningful and under my control. Be happy sounds like a better life tip. Achieving that is worth more than its weight in gold.
Yeah, I’d pick that one instead.

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Sounds of laughter, shades of earth are ringing
Through my open ears inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a
Million suns and calls me on and on
Across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Jai guru deva [Repeat to fade]
It’s a thought I’ve entertained but never said aloud, that should A have happened the whole world might have inspired for what seems now the obvious B not to have followed. Nicely done. I love Fiona’s version almost as much as the original. 🙂

I thought I only knew a few Fiona Apple songs, but I was more curious about her after this post and listened to a bunch more. I knew more than I thought. I agree. This is a pretty good cover.

Fiona does a good cover of the song, captures Lennon’s vocal nicely. Yup… change one thing, change everything!

Good call, Gen X. We get what we get; it’s up to us to enjoy it.

I couldn’t have said it better than that. That’s a keeper. I’m going to remember that one.

I actually find that question incredibly hard to answer. I do get your first comment, Apple shares back then would have been a nice nest egg. But I guess that’s only because we now know what happens. I’m always a bit nervous to think what would I have changed if I had a Time Machine because I wouldn’t know the knock on consequences of my actions?

That’s interesting. I’ve always thought it would be fun to relive certain seasons of life. But it wouldn’t be the same bring in the know. Small changes may trigger bigger changes and outcomes and everything would be different. I’m not sure if I’m totally want that.
