Steps. I need more of them. Sitting is the new smoking they say. The only difference is I love smoking, but don’t. Having a smoke is completely relaxing. Too bad I can’t light one up while taking a stroll.
I worked with a friend that smoked a pack a day. I don’t blame her. She was highly successful and with success, comes stress. She retired over ten years ago and I hear she now walks over five miles daily and looks fabulous. I asked a friend if she still smokes. Like a chimney. Some habits die harder than others.
I don’t get a huge step count, but try to rack up a few after dinner. I always bring my phone because I need to see how many steps I’ve collected to make me feel better. I’m not much of a picture taker on my walks. It’s just suburbia, nothing too fascinating. Except once a gigantic coyote crossed our path. It scared the shit out of me. I was more concerned about living than snapping a National Geographic shot. That’s the most excitement I’ve had on my walks in recent years. But you never know. Something interesting might pop up someday. I’ll keep an eye out with my camera ready at a moments notice.
I’m not a huge rap fan, but I did like Run DMC back in the day. Walking made me think of Walk This Way when they covered the Aerosmith song. Forty years later, this still sounds pretty good.

Now there's a backseat/lover
That's always under/cover
And I talk til my daddy say
Said you ain't seen/nuthin
Til you're down on her/muffin
And there's sure to be a change in ways
Now there's a cheer/leader
That's a real big/pleaser
As far as I can remi/nisce
But the best thing/love it
Was her sister and her/cousin
And it started with a little kiss, like this
She starts/swingin
With the boys in/tune
And her feet just fly up in the air
Singin hey diddle diddle with a kitty in the middle
And they swingin like it just don't care
So I took a big/chance
At the high school/dance
With a lady who was ready to play
It wasn't me she was/foolin
Cause she knew what was she was/doin
when she told me how to walk this way
[Chorus: Run-D.M.C. and Aerosmith]
She told me to
Walk this way!
Talk this way!
[repeat 2X]
[repeat all 2X]
Well just gimme a kiss/some head!
Oooh, a-like this!
[Run-D.M.C.]
School girl/sleazy
With a/classy kind of sassy
Little skirt hangin way up her knee
It was three young ladies
In the school gym/locker
And they find they were lookin D
I was high school/loser
Never made it with a/lady
Til a boy told me somethin I missed
That my next door/neighbor
had a daughter/had a favor
And I gave the girl just a little kiss, like this
[Aerosmith]
She starts swingin with the boys in the school
with her feet flyin up in the air
Singing hey diddle diddle with a kitty in the middle
I was swingin like I didn't care
So I took a big chance at the high school dance
With a miss who was ready to play
Wasn't me she was foolin cause she knew what she was doin
when she told me how to walk this way
[Chorus]
That was definitely a great and memorable cover!

I never got into smoking. I think it’s because my dad smoked since before I was born. It’s just never appealed to me.

I don’t smoke. I had a short spat that I did, but gave it up because it’s not the best for health. But I did enjoy it.

Smoking is bad! Maybe it was in the past a sign of wealth, prestige, and power (based to some old Hollywood movies.) it’s not that fancy anymore…it’s disgusting.
Keep walking.

Yes, I agree. I had a short spat of smoking and enjoyed it a lot, but gave it up. It’s pretty relaxing though.

My son and I were walking the dog when we noticed a coyote across the way. I hadn’t realized before, but all of a sudden our dachshund seemed very small. We immediately walked slowly but also swiftly away. Scary!

I’m surprised about all the coyotes I hear about in the neighborhoods. I never saw them as a kid. Good thing you saw the coyote in time.

I used to regularly get my 10,000 steps in each day but now I tends to exercise at the pool and gym as my knees tend to start screaming “No” when I walk too far these days.
The coyote story reminded me of being in the USA back in 2023 when we drove the Eastern Seaboard. We visited Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge en route through Florida. When we visited the information centre to acquire more information the guy was explaining the best route to drive and where to stop, get out, walk around and take photos (my husband is a photography enthusiast) and he was suddenly talking about venomous snakes and alligators! The conversation went something like this
“Sorry”.
” They are more scared of you Mam then you are of them”
” We come from a country where nothing can kill you except another human being and even that is rare”
” Honestly you’ll be fine Mam”
I considered myself incredibly brave getting out of the car and actually doing some of the walks after this 😊

Such a funny story! Someone once told me the same thing. The bears are more frightened than we are. I had to disagree, because bears frightened me! Don’t get me started with venomous snakes and alligators…. Glad you braved the wild and had a good time!

On the same trip we stayed on the outskirts of Charleston overlooking a beautiful but fairly small lake. There were signs up everywhere “Beware of Alligators” . One afternoon I looked out and the family downstairs were having a picnic right next to the lake with their young children.
“Are they mad” I thought, ” Have they seen the signage” .
I came to the conclusion that when you live amongst wild animals it somewhat becomes the norm?
